The marine East Indies: diversity and speciation
نویسنده
چکیده
The East Indies Triangle, a relatively small part of the IndoPacific Ocean, is unique in terms of its species diversity and evolutionary importance. Within this area (Fig. 1), the high species diversity of the major groups of marine organisms, such as the fishes, corals, echinoderms and molluscs, is almost unbelievable. Although species from the Triangle have been collected and described since the early part of the nineteenth century, new ones are being discovered every year. Biologists have done more work on the fishes than on any other group, yet they are still not well known. But one can now make a reasonably good prediction about the number of species that are there and can reach some general conclusions about their formation and geographical distribution. Species from the Triangle probably play a major role in the assemblage and maintenance of coral reef communities throughout the Indo-Pacific (Mora et al., 2003). The influence of such species is considered to be related to their mode of speciation. Georgia Museum of Natural History, The University of Georgia, Athens, GA, USA

Patterns of biodiversity and endemism on Indo-West Pacific coral reefs
Diversity of the primary groups of contemporary Indo-West Pacific coral reef organisms, including mantis shrimps (stomatopod crustaceans), peaks in the Indo-Australian Archipelago (IAA), reaches a lower peak in East Africa and Madagascar [Indian Ocean continental (IOC)], and declines in the central Indian Ocean (IO) and Central Pacific (CP). Percent endemism in stomatopods (highest in the IAA, ...

متن کاملPhylogeography of the Sponge Suberites diversicolor in Indonesia: Insights into the Evolution of Marine Lake Populations
The existence of multiple independently derived populations in landlocked marine lakes provides an opportunity for fundamental research into the role of isolation in population divergence and speciation in marine taxa. Marine lakes are landlocked water bodies that maintain a marine character through narrow submarine connections to the sea and could be regarded as the marine equivalents of terre...

The present article is a review of a palaeobiogeographic analysis of Jurassic Ostracods from East Africa, India and Madagascar and includes also some general remarks on palaeobiogeography, biodiversity and Ostracod ecology. The palaeobiogeographic study shows the high significance of this microfossil group for the reconstruction of palaeogeographic processes, particularly plate tectonic developm...

Synthesis of a natural proline-rich cyclopolypeptide - rolloamide A [8] was carried out by coupling of tri- and tetrapeptide units Boc-Phe-Pro-Val-OMe and Boc-Pro-Leu-Pro-Ile-OMe after proper deprotection at carboxyl and amino terminals using carbodiimide chemistry in alkaline environment followed by cyclization of linear heptapeptide segment in the presence of base. The structure of synthesize...
